The Blurb

Meet the Bird family.  They are lovely.  They eat dinner together every nights in their beautiful home in the idyllic Cotswolds village.  One Easter Sunday, tragedy occurs.  The aftermath begins to tear this perfect family apart.  Told in prose from the past and the present, the reader eventually gets the full story...and is glued to each page until reaching that point.

My Two Cents

We read The House We Grew Up In for book club and I am so glad! It's been on my shelf for ages.  I'm not sure what took me so long to read it, but I'm kicking myself for not reading it sooner!

Simple pleasures. New slippers & a good book. #bookstagram #book #bookish #bookclub #mustread #booknerd #bookworm #baylorproud #coldweather #coldfeet

Lisa Jewell nails dysfunctional family in all the best ways.  The love, the tangles, the things we don't talk about, the hidden hurt and heartache.  She writes it all beautifully.  This is one of the best books I've read all year, from story line to flow to editing--all that combined talent has given us the most lovely book.  It is both tragic and wonderful.

The character of Lorelai is absolutely fascinating.  Her idealism and mental illness, her love life and her oddities are all so well developed that you almost forget that you don't know this family. You love with her and you ache for her.

Amazing characters, surprising plot...I can't recommend this one enough!
